Senior car insurance in Belgium: premium, refusal, lifetime cover

Age alone is not a lawful reason to refuse you, but it weighs on premiums and renewal. Lifetime cover, health and omnium: the clauses to read before 60.

Not on age alone, in principle: every application must be assessed individually, the Federal Advisory Council for Older People reminds us. Age still weighs on the premium, on the cover offered and on how easily you stay with your insurer. It all comes down to three places in the contract: the "lifetime" guarantee, the cancellation clauses and the omnium.

Can an insurer refuse a driver because of age?

It should not, and Belgium sets no upper age limit for driving. The licence involves no automatic medical check at a given age either, as the legal information site Droits Quotidiens notes (page of 17 September 2025).

Practice is another matter. In its 2019/03 opinion on equal access to car insurance for older drivers, approved on 14 March 2019, the Federal Advisory Council for Older People found that several insurers use risk profiles to accept or refuse a driver, that exclusions happen without notice, that surcharges rest on age alone and that some refuse to renew, sending the customer to the Tariff Bureau (Bureau de Tarification, the body that imposes third-party cover on drivers refused elsewhere).

That is the paradox. The same opinion says drivers aged 70 and over show the lowest bonus-malus levels and the lowest accident rates.

At what age does the premium move?

Around 75 according to Belgian comparison sites, with some discounts from 50 at certain insurers. The figure that matters most comes from elsewhere, though: the insurer you pick.

A public simulation by a Belgian comparison site, taken in April 2022, gives a dated benchmark. For a 2017 diesel Golf and a man with no accident for five years at bonus-malus 0, third-party cover only, premiums ran from €262 to €565 a year at age 60 depending on the insurer and the region (Brussels or Wallonia). At 75, at most insurers that quoted online, the premium stayed within a few tens of euros of the 60-year-old price. One exception rose by more than half in the Brussels Region. I found no comparable data for Flanders.

Keep the lesson rather than the amounts: the gap between two insurers exceeded €300, more than the age surcharge almost everywhere. These figures are over four years old and show a proportion, not a price list.

What is "lifetime" cover for seniors really worth?

Only its written conditions say, not its name. On its "Drive for Life" page, DVV announces that compulsory third-party cover is maintained for life, at the earliest from the renewal following your 60th birthday, for a car insured with DVV for at least five years without an at-fault accident. It ends in case of aggravating circumstances, such as drink-driving or hit and run, or a recognised physical inability to drive.

Take a case. You join DVV at 57 and turn 60 three years later: you have only three years of history. The page says that with under five years at DVV, the guarantee is earned after five years of claim-free driving, so around 62. What the page does not say is whether an at-fault accident resets the clock. Ask for that in writing.

Other insurers have had comparable schemes. Comparison pages mention AXA and Corona Direct, the latter from 58 with no at-fault accident over five years, but I could not read their current conditions at source. Do not rely on a comparison site for a commitment of this kind.

Above all, an age-linked advantage is never free. Ethias's "Modulo 50+" rules, in the version published online (07/11), reserve the benefits for those holding at least three base policies, end them if one lapses and allow the insurer to change or withdraw the conditions. That is not lifetime cover, it is a conditional discount.

Before relying on such a commitment, put five questions to your intermediary:

  • What seniority is required, and does an at-fault accident reset it?
  • Which covers are included: third-party only, or also omnium and legal protection?
  • Which other policies (home, family, life) must you hold to keep the advantage?
  • Who recognises the physical inability to drive, and by what procedure?
  • Can the insurer change the commitment unilaterally, and with how much notice?

Does lifetime cover prevent cancellation after an accident?

For third-party cover, that is exactly its purpose, within the limits above. Without it, the insurer keeps its usual rights: cancelling at renewal with three months' notice, or after a claim, within a short window (one month after paying or refusing the indemnity, effective three months later, under common Belgian contract rules). Confirm these deadlines in your general conditions, as they vary. Details are in our article on cancelling car insurance.

A cancelled driver can end up uninsured. If several insurers refuse, the Tariff Bureau imposes third-party cover and a premium for one year, a procedure described in the article after a cancellation. The Council also recommends reviewing such files after three claim-free years at the latest. That is a 2019 recommendation, not a rule.

Must you declare health problems to your insurer?

When they affect driving, yes. According to Droits Quotidiens, a serious health problem likely to impair driving and left undeclared can allow the insurer to refuse payment after an accident. The same logic appears in increase in risk and false declaration, where a good-faith omission and a deliberate silence do not cost the same.

The right order is simple. Doctor first, who can recommend a fitness assessment through the FPS Mobility (SPF Mobilité) if in doubt. Intermediary next. Do not stay silent hoping nobody asks.

Which cover should you keep after 70?

The one whose extra premium stays below the loss you avoid. A car loses value every year and omnium pays on the insured value, whether market, agreed or new-for-old, explained in the article on market, agreed and new value.

A worked example, with fictional amounts. A nine-year-old saloon is worth €9,000. Omnium costs €380 more a year, with a €500 excess. Over five years the extra premium reaches €1,900, while the market value will have shrunk. A mini-omnium, presented in mini-omnium vs full omnium, covers theft, fire and natural forces for much less. I will not decide for you: the right answer depends on the garage budget you have and what you could replace without harm.

A second lever, often forgotten: mileage. Seniors drive less on average, and an exact declaration rather than a rounded one can be negotiated (see the mileage article).

To line up covers, the comparison tool puts contracts side by side, the ranking of the best car insurance details what each insurer covers and excludes, and the quiz frames the level of cover you need. Our reading method is in the article on specific conditions. DVV's page is public: Drive for Life (in French).

Contracts fall under the Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance. In a dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman reviews complaints free of charge, the FSMA (the Belgian financial regulator) supervises the conduct rules of insurers and intermediaries, and the Tariff Bureau steps in as a last resort for third-party cover.

This site informs and compares. It is not an insurance intermediary and gives no individual recommendation: your general and specific conditions, and only they, are binding.

Frequently asked questions

Belgian comparison sites put the turning point around 75, but the gap between insurers is far larger. In a public 2022 simulation, the spread between cheapest and dearest at age 60 exceeded €300, more than the age surcharge at most insurers.

In principle no: age alone should not suffice, as each file must be assessed individually. The insurer keeps its usual rights, though: cancellation at renewal with three months' notice, or shortly after a claim. Your general conditions spell out the cases.

The Belgian licence involves no automatic medical check at a given age. A serious condition affecting driving must be declared to the insurer, however, or it may refuse to pay after an accident. If in doubt, a doctor can refer you for a fitness assessment.

No, according to DVV's page, it maintains compulsory third-party (RC) cover. Omnium stays subject to the insurer's policy, its excess and the insured value, which falls every year.

Yes, via the claims-history certificate covering your last five years. Each insurer then applies its own scale, so the same history can cost much less elsewhere. Lifetime cover, however, starts again at the new insurer.

Check the deadline and reason in the registered letter, ask for written explanations, then contact the Insurance Ombudsman, which is free. If several insurers then refuse, the Tariff Bureau can impose third-party cover and a price for one year.
