No, you are not obliged. In Belgium a bank cannot tie your account or your loan to its car insurance: the Code of Economic Law prohibits, in principle, the tying of a financial service. It may offer you a discounted package. Your real job is to find out which insurer carries the policy, and what the discount is actually worth.
Can a bank force its car insurance on you?
No, not as a condition of another product.
The rule rests on two words that the practical guide published on 23 May 2025 by FSMA, the Belgian financial regulator, and the FPS Economy carefully separate. Tying means you must buy the items together. Bundling means a package in which each item remains available on its own. Article VI.81 of the Code of Economic Law prohibits the first in principle as soon as a financial service is involved, and insurance is one. The second is allowed, and that is exactly what a bank does when it offers "account, home and car" with an overall reduction.
The FSMA and FPS Economy handbook on cross-selling goes further. When a package contains insurance and another product, Article 286 of the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 requires the distributor to say whether the items can be bought separately and, if so, to provide separate evidence of costs. And when the package brings together several insurance policies, it must assess your needs policy by policy.
And for a car loan, can the banker require its omnium?
It can require insurance. It cannot require its own.
Article VII.87, paragraph 1, of the Code of Economic Law forbids the lender and the credit intermediary from imposing on the consumer, as part of a loan, another contract taken out with itself or with a third party it designates. The FSMA handbook adds three points that change everything at the counter: the lender must prove that you chose freely, a pre-printed sentence in its general terms is not enough, and a positive act on your part is expected, typically a box you tick yourself. A contrary clause is deemed unwritten, and the sanction can go as far as reducing your obligations to the cash price of the vehicle.
| Situation at the counter | In principle | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "No account without our car insurance" | Tying prohibited | Ask for the account-only offer, in writing |
| Account, home and car package with discount | Bundling allowed | Ask for the price of each item separately |
| Car loan with omnium required | Allowed if the choice of insurer stays free | Present the omnium of your choice |
| Car loan with "our omnium compulsory" | Prohibited by Article VII.87 | Refuse and keep a written record |
| Reduced mortgage rate tied to car insurance | Outside the legal list since 1 June 2024 | Report it to the FPS Economy |
One real fact shows what is at stake: the FSMA handbook recalls that criminal courts have already sanctioned intermediaries who imposed insurance at prices well above the market.
Seven bank brands, seven insurers behind the counter
Almost never the bank itself. It distributes, often as a tied agent, and a separate company carries the risk.

What is a multi-policy discount really worth?
Judge it in euros, on the total, never as a percentage.
Take a fictional household offered three contracts by its bank: car 780 euros, home 420 euros, family liability 100 euros, 1,300 euros a year in all, with a 5% overall discount. The displayed saving is 65 euros. If the same car cover, with identical guarantees and excess, costs 630 euros elsewhere, the gap on that single contract is 150 euros, and the package actually costs 85 euros a year more than two well-chosen separate contracts. The reverse also happens, when the bank's car policy is already at market price. Only a line-by-line comparison decides, and that is precisely the information Article 286 entitles you to request.
A discount is not the only loyalty benefit. KBC, for instance, announces a "lifetime insurance guarantee" on third-party liability for customers aged 55 to 65 insured with KBC Assurances for at least five years and accident-free for five years, except in case of a breach of the general conditions.
It is a valuable clause.
It also shows why leaving a bank-insurer needs preparing: some benefits depend on seniority, and they do not follow you to a competitor.
Who handles your claim if you signed at the counter?
The insurer, not the branch. At Beobank, the information sheet refers you to ACM Belgium's claims department, and complaints go to ACM Belgium and then to the Insurance Ombudsman. The banker can pass on your file, but does not decide the payout.
What should you check in the contract before signing at the bank?
The insurer's general conditions, not the branch brochure. The general conditions of Beobank car insurance, edition 09/2025, say so themselves: they form the contract together with the specific conditions, and the latter prevail in case of conflict. The information sheet also refers to the general conditions for the full list of exclusions.
Before paying the first premium, check at least:
- the insurer's name and status, the brand being only an intermediary registered with FSMA;
- the full general conditions, not just the information sheet;
- the excess on each cover, partial omnium included;
- benefits tied to being a customer: discount, premium protection, no-cancellation guarantee;
- what happens if you close your account: lost discount, payment method to change;
- the free-choice box if the insurance is taken out at the same time as a loan.
Our step-by-step reading of specific conditions shows where each item sits.
Does changing bank end your car insurance?
In principle no: the contract binds the policyholder to the insurer, not to the current account. You may lose a discount tied to the banking relationship and need to change the premium direct debit, but cover continues until you cancel it under the rules set out in our guide to cancelling car insurance.

To compare channels, the article direct insurer, bank or broker sets out the differences in advice and claims handling, the comparison tool lines up cover at equal excess, the ranking of the best car insurance in Belgium details what each company covers and refuses, and the quiz frames in two minutes the level of cover you need. The full rules are in the FSMA_2025_09 handbook (French and Dutch only), and FSMA keeps the public register of insurance intermediaries.
Insurer sources consulted on 23 October 2026: the KBC car insurance page, the general conditions of Beobank car insurance and Ageas's press release on the partnership with BNP Paribas Fortis. They illustrate practices and do not replace your own conditions.
