ING car insurance: the bank sells, NN carries the risk

At ING the bank distributes and NN Non-Life Insurance insures. Cover levels, a fixed excess of 400 to 800 euros, missing exclusions and questions to ask before signing.

At ING, the bank is not the insurer. The contract is carried by NN Non-Life Insurance, ING distributes and advises, and NN handles claims. You therefore sign with an insurer of Dutch origin, authorised to operate in Belgium, through your bank's counter or app. Excesses, exclusions and ceilings are written in its conditions, not in the branch's.

ING car insurance: the bank sells, NN carries the risk

The sentence looks harmless. It changes the question to ask.

A Belgian bank selling car insurance acts as a distribution channel, like a broker or an agent. The company that guarantees payment of the claim is elsewhere. According to the ING page of a comparison website, updated on 9 June 2026, non-life contracts are "legally carried" by NN Non-Life Insurance, with ING providing "distribution and advice" and NN handling claims. I could not consult ING's own general conditions, which is information in itself: they are not easy to find before you request a quote.

My guiding rule on this site stays the same: no recommendation without having read the exclusions. Here, the first step is knowing which document holds them.

Which cover levels does ING offer?

Three levels, described the same way by the pages I read.

LevelWhat it covers in principleExcess announced
Third-party liabilityDamage caused to others, plus assistance after a claim in BelgiumNot applicable
Mini-omniumLiability, plus theft, glass breakage, fire, natural forces and animalsNot published
Full omniumAll risks, including when you are at fault, plus vandalismFixed, your choice: 400, 600 or 800 euros

Four options come on top: breakdown assistance in Belgium and abroad, driver cover (announced ceiling of 1,500,000 euros), legal protection and premium protection after a first at-fault claim. Full omnium also announces a purchase value kept at 100% for 24 months.

These lines describe an offer, not your contract. Your specific policy conditions prevail, and the difference between mini-omnium and full omnium is set out in our mini-omnium versus full omnium comparison.

Do other banks work the same way?

Yes in principle, no in the names. The table gathers what I could confirm in public documents or in this site's articles. It does not claim to cover the whole market.

A single bank may distribute several products with different risk carriers, and the arrangement changes with commercial agreements. The insurer's name is therefore checked on the contract, never on the signboard.

An NN skeleton published by another distributor

To see what an NN contract looks like, I read the information sheet of an "NN Mobility" product published by another distributor. It is not ING's contract, the sheet carries no date, and its conditions may differ. It still shows the kind of clauses a contract from this insurer contains.

  • Omnium excess: minimum 400 euros, exact amount in the policy.
  • Repair ceiling: repair costs cannot exceed the real value of the vehicle.
  • Total loss: a monthly depreciation applies depending on the formula chosen.
  • Recourse: in certain cases, such as drink driving, the insurer may claim back what it paid.
  • Exclusions cited: intentional damage, races and competitions, goods carried for business purposes, main driver wrongly declared.
  • Claim notification: eight days at most.
  • Cancellation notice: at least three months before the annual renewal date.

The insurer is presented there as a company under Dutch law, with a Belgian representative registered with FSMA that settles claims. The set-up is common in the Belgian market and nothing to worry about. It simply explains why the number to call after an accident is not the branch's.

What is missing from the public pages?

Most of what separates two policies at the same price. Here is the position on 20 October 2026, based on the pages I consulted.

InformationVisible in the public offer? What to ask for
Exclusions of liability and omniumNoFull general conditions
Liability ceilingsNoGeneral conditions
Mini-omnium excessNoSpecific conditions or quote
Conditions of the 24-month purchase valueNoExact wording of the cover
Conditions of premium protectionNoExact wording of the option
Legal protection ceilingNoConditions of the option

Nothing is hidden, the lines are simply missing at this level of reading. That is true of most commercial shop windows, banks included.

A 600 euro excess and a 24-month purchase value: two worked examples

First example. Your door is dented and the body shop quotes 2,300 euros. With full omnium and a fixed excess of 600 euros, the insurer pays 1,700 euros. With 400 euros it would pay 1,900, with 800 euros, 1,500. The excess gap is worth 400 euros on this single claim.

Second example, hypothetical. A new car insured for 30,000 euros is written off in its 20th month. If the 24-month purchase value cover applies with no hidden condition, compensation starts from 30,000 euros. In month 30 it depends on the depreciation schedule. With an assumed 1.5% per month over the six months after the guaranteed period, which is a calculation assumption and not NN's schedule, compensation would fall to 27,300 euros. Ask for the schedule in writing: the mechanism is described in our article on market value, agreed value and new-for-old.

Bank or broker: who defends you?

The objection is serious: your bank knows you, it holds your file, its app reports a claim in a few clicks, and that is reassuring. All true, and that comfort has value.

It does not answer the central question. In a disagreement over a payout, the counter adviser sells the product of the insurer that pays, whereas an independent broker chooses between several insurers and is tied to none of them in particular. That does not make the counter dishonest, it describes a position. The independent broker and the direct insurer are not equivalent on this point either.

What remains is what any intermediary owes you: the duty of advice, detailed in our article on the duty of advice, meaning information adapted to your situation before signing. The exact status of the intermediary, agent, broker or other, is checked in the FSMA register.

Five questions to ask before signing at the bank

They fit on one sheet and apply to any channel.

  1. What is the exact name of the insurer written on the specific conditions, and who settles claims?
  2. Can I receive the full general conditions before paying the first premium, not just the information sheet?
  3. What is the excess on each cover, including mini-omnium and natural forces?
  4. What does premium protection cover, after how many claims and for how many years?
  5. What happens at the end of the contract: notice period, online cancellation, keeping the claims-history certificate?

The last one concerns the calendar. According to an independent cancellation site, contracts taken out before 1 October 2024 can only be cancelled at the annual renewal date with three months' notice, whereas contracts taken out from that date can be cancelled at any time from the second year, with two months' notice. The full procedure is in our guide to cancelling car insurance.

Your current contract in three searches

If you already hold a policy sold by a bank, open the specific conditions PDF and look for three items: the insurer's name, the excess of each cover, the total-loss clause. Our step-by-step reading of specific conditions shows where each one sits.

The signboard at the counter is not necessarily the insurer's name written on the contract.

To compare what banks, brokers and direct insurers offer, the comparison tool lines up the cover side by side, the ranking of the best car insurance in Belgium details what each company covers and refuses, and the quiz frames in two minutes the level of cover your car needs. If a claim is already under way and the file is stuck, mediation is free with the Insurance Ombudsman, and FSMA, the Belgian financial regulator, supervises the conduct rules of insurers and intermediaries. The Act of 4 April 2014 governs Belgian insurance contracts.

Information on ING and NN comes from public pages consulted on 20 October 2026, including the ING page of a comparison website and the NN Mobility information sheet. They illustrate practices and do not replace your own conditions.

Frequently asked questions

According to the pages consulted, the contract is carried by NN Non-Life Insurance, with ING handling distribution and advice and NN handling claims. The exact name of the risk carrier appears in your specific policy conditions, which prevail.

Nobody can say without a quote: the premium depends on the vehicle, postcode, mileage, age and your degree on the 0-22 bonus-malus scale. Compare like for like, excess included, rather than premium against premium.

The pages consulted do not say, and I do not take it for granted. Ask at the branch or during the online simulation before you compare, because the answer shapes everything that follows.

Start with the insurer's complaints department, then, without a satisfactory answer, refer the matter free of charge to the Insurance Ombudsman. FSMA, the Belgian financial regulator, supervises the conduct rules of insurers and intermediaries but does not rule on your individual dispute.
