AG car insurance: Top Omnium or Top Occasium?

Top Omnium, Top Occasium, mini omnium, OmniNature: AG Insurance's car formulas compared cover by cover, with the written exclusions and the sales channel.

ByGrégory8 min read

At AG Insurance, Top Omnium is aimed at new or recent cars and Top Occasium at used cars, whose premium is calculated on the purchase invoice. Both come as a mini omnium or a full omnium. (Omnium is the Belgian term for own-damage cover.) The choice therefore runs along two axes, the age of the car and the level of cover, and then the exclusions, which are almost identical.

On 29 October 2026 I reread the product pages published by BNP Paribas Fortis, which distributes AG, and the information document they point to. Everything below comes from there unless stated otherwise.

Four ways to insure your car with AG

AG Insurance is Belgium's largest insurer, licensed under code 0079 and supervised by the National Bank of Belgium. Its car insurance starts from compulsory third-party liability, to which you add either a weather add-on or a two-level omnium.

CoverLiability onlyLiability + OmniNatureMulti-risk (mini omnium)Full omnium

At-fault accident, impact with no third partyNoNoNoYes

Vandalism deserves a line of its own. AG places it in full omnium, as an intentional act committed by someone other than the insured, not in the multi-risk level. Many policyholders believe the opposite.

The table describes the public offer. Your own contract is read in your particular conditions: only they say which column you actually signed.

Top Omnium or Top Occasium: which one for your car?

The difference lies not in the guarantees, which overlap, but in how the car is valued.

Top Omnium targets new or recent used cars. You choose to insure it on its catalogue value or its invoice value. The product page announces compensation with no loss of value as long as the car has not passed 10,000 km, a replacement vehicle for 30 days after a theft, and cover in every country listed on the green card. The Pack Omnium+ 36 add-on extends the car's "new" status to 36 months and 36,000 km, covers a roof box or bike rack up to 2,000 euros and winter tyres up to 1,000 euros.

Top Occasium targets used cars. Its premium is calculated on the purchase invoice, logically lower than the catalogue value. Damage covered by the "small" omnium is settled without an excess. The Pack Occasium+ guarantees no loss of value for 12 months after the invoice, a replacement vehicle after a theft, up to 2,000 euros for items damaged in the car and up to 1,000 euros for winter tyres, fitted or not.

An example, with fictitious figures. You buy a five-year-old saloon for 14,000 euros whose new catalogue price was 31,000 euros. An omnium based on catalogue value would charge a premium on a base you will never recover after a total loss, since the payout will take the car's age into account. Top Occasium's logic, starting from the 14,000 euros actually paid, fits this case better. The difference between these valuation bases is explained in our article on market, agreed and new-for-old value.

That leaves the price.

I give no premium: it depends on your bonus-malus level (the Belgian 0 to 22 no-claims scale), your age, your postcode and the car, and an amount attributed to an insurer without those parameters would be wrong by construction. For an order of magnitude, the simulator is built for that.

AG mini omnium or OmniNature: where does the small cover stop?

They look alike on hail and diverge on everything else.

The mini omnium, which BNP Paribas Fortis presents as "suited to a used car of 3 to 7 years", covers theft, break-in, fire, glass breakage, collision with an animal, storms, hail and flooding. It excludes theft if the anti-theft system required by the insurer was not active at the time. Our article on mini omnium shows where this boundary sits at other insurers.

OmniNature is a different animal: an add-on to liability cover, not an omnium. It covers hail, flooding, storms with gusts of at least 80 km/h, glass and a list of natural disasters. No excess at an AG-approved repairer or glazing specialist. Elsewhere, the excess is 250 euros.

And it excludes, in black and white, damage caused by thrown-up gravel or pieces of ice. A windscreen chipped by a stone on the motorway is therefore, in principle, not covered by OmniNature, whereas it is covered by the glass breakage guarantee of the mini omnium. For a ten-year-old car parked outside, OmniNature is often enough against hail; for a car that does a lot of motorway driving, this exclusion matters. The detail of glass cover is in our windscreen and glass article, and hail has its own article.

Two products, two levels of cover: at AG, the list of exclusions should be read before the premium.

The exclusions AG writes, formula by formula

The product page lists them itself, which is rare and useful. Here are the ones I would check first, with the formula concerned:

  • wear, construction or material defects, lack of maintenance (full omnium): a breakdown is not a claim, as our article on mechanical breakdown explains;
  • costs resulting from a technical defect and slow-acting factors, deterioration, discolouration, corrosion (full omnium);
  • damage caused or worsened by carried animals or objects (full omnium): the dog scratching the upholstery, the crate denting the tailgate;
  • theft without the required anti-theft system active or working, and theft in which the insured is the author or an accomplice (mini omnium and full omnium);
  • glass breakage when the vehicle is a total loss (mini omnium and full omnium): the glass is compensated within the car's value, not on top;
  • damage caused by a driver who is drunk or under the influence of drugs (full omnium).

The second-to-last line often surprises. In practice it removes nothing, since a total loss pays for the whole car, but it prevents you from stacking both payouts.

The last one can change everything. A drink-driving exclusion applies even if alcohol played no visible part in the damage to your own car, and it comes on top of the forfeiture of cover rules set by law. The page finally states that its list is not exhaustive and refers to the general conditions, which every policyholder should at least skim at the exclusions chapter.

Fixed or Flexi excess: which one to choose?

AG's mini omnium applies with no excess. On full omnium material damage, two formulas exist according to public descriptions of the product: a fixed excess, which varies with the car's value, and a Flexi excess, waived when a third party acknowledges the facts in writing or in case of theft or vandalism reported to the police within 24 hours.

Take a torn-off mirror and a dented door in a car park, quote 1,800 euros, fictitious amounts. With a fixed 400 euro excess, the omnium pays 1,400 euros whether or not the culprit is found. With Flexi, if the driver at fault left a signed note, you recover the 1,800 euros; if they drove off, the excess applies. The choice therefore depends on your exposure to impacts with no known author: street parking, dense cities, supermarket car parks. Excess mechanisms are covered in our article on the English excess, and the case where the other driver is at fault in the one on the excess after a not-at-fault accident.

Broker or BNP Paribas Fortis branch: the same contract?

Yes for the product, no for the rest. AG does not sell its car insurance direct. There are two entry points: the independent broker, and BNP Paribas Fortis, registered with the FSMA (the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority) as an insurance agent, also reachable through bpost offices.

The difference shows in the detail. The promotions recorded on 29 October 2026 on the bank's site, such as the Pack Omnium+ 36 offered free for a contract signed between 1 October and 15 November 2026, are only available by booking an appointment at a branch, a bpost office or the Easy Banking Centre. They are reserved for main drivers aged 26 and over, with a bonus-malus level between -2 and 8 and at most one at-fault accident in five years. A broker, on the other hand, can place your risk with AG or elsewhere, which is exactly what an agent tied to a single insurer does not do, since they only offer the products of the company they represent, whatever your profile. Our comparison of direct insurer vs broker and the article on car insurance through your bank detail what each channel owes you.

On the way out, the product page recalls the Belgian rule in force for contracts signed or renewed since 1 October 2024: cancellation up to two months before the anniversary date, then at any time from the second year, taking effect two months after notification. The full procedure is in our guide to cancelling car insurance.

Three profiles, three verdicts

New car financed over four years: full Top Omnium, with the Pack Omnium+ if new-for-old value over 36 months matters to you.

Five-year-old used car bought from a dealer: Top Occasium, full if you park on the street, multi-risk otherwise.

Ten-year-old car worth less than 4,000 euros: liability cover, with OmniNature if hail worries you, keeping the gravel exclusion in mind.

To set AG against other insurers, the comparison tool lines up the guarantees and the ranking of the best car insurers details what each company covers and excludes. The quiz frames the omnium level you need in two minutes, and for a recent purchase, the article on insuring a used car lists the points to check. For another insurer read the same way, see Ethias or the general comparison mini omnium vs full omnium.

Belgian car insurance contracts are governed by the Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance (in French). In case of dispute over the extent of a guarantee, the Insurance Ombudsman, the Belgian dispute service for insurance consumers, reviews complaints free of charge. The documents quoted are public: the Top Omnium page, the Top Occasium page and the product's general conditions (in French).

This site informs and compares. It is not an insurance intermediary and gives no individual recommendation. The guarantees described are those publicly displayed on the survey date and may change.

Frequently asked questions

Top Omnium is designed for a new or recent used car, insured on its catalogue value or invoice value. Top Occasium targets used cars and bases the premium on the purchase invoice. Both offer a multi-risk level and a full level; your particular conditions state which one you signed.

In principle, no. The multi-risk formula covers theft, fire, glass breakage, natural disasters, collision with an animal and rodent-chewed wiring. Hitting a post or a scratch with no identified third party falls under material damage, meaning full omnium.

Not entirely. OmniNature is an add-on to third-party liability covering hail, flooding, storms with gusts of at least 80 km/h and glass, with no excess at an AG-approved repairer and a 250 euro excess elsewhere. It covers neither theft, nor fire, nor thrown-up gravel.

AG does not sell its car insurance direct. The contract is taken out through a broker or through BNP Paribas Fortis, an insurance agent registered with the FSMA. The bank offers an online simulation, but an adviser finalises the policy.
