In principle, mini-omnium covers five risks you suffer: fire, theft, broken glass, natural forces and collision with animals. It does not reimburse your bodywork after an accident you caused. Between those two sentences sits everything that changes the payout: the exclusions, which almost nobody reads before a claim.
What does mini-omnium cover, formula by formula?
The table places mini-omnium between mandatory liability cover (RC, the only compulsory insurance in Belgium) and full omnium. It describes common Belgian market practice, not your contract: your specific conditions are authoritative, and our mini-omnium vs full omnium comparison deals with the choice itself.
| Situation | RC only | Mini-omnium | Mini-omnium plus (total loss) | Full omnium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car stolen with forced entry | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| Fire, lightning, explosion | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| Windscreen, side windows | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| Hail, storm, flood | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| Collision with an animal | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| At-fault accident, repairable car | No | No | No | Yes in principle |
| At-fault accident, unrepairable car | No | No | Yes in principle | Yes in principle |
| Vandalism, scratched car | No | Often no | Often no | Yes in principle |
One line, the seventh, justifies the intermediate formula.
Five covers, five ways not to be paid
I recommend no formula without having read its exclusions, and for mini-omnium they fit in a few articles. I read the mini-omnium section of the Ethias general conditions in October 2026 (French original). Each of the five covers has its own gaps.
- Fire. Covered: fire, explosion, lightning, short circuit. Excluded: damage caused by a load of easily flammable or explosive materials, and damage caused by thieves. Fuel in the tank and domestic gas bottles are exceptions.
- Theft. Covered: theft with forced entry, with violence, or by breaking into the building where the car sleeps. Excluded: theft by relatives or people entrusted with the vehicle or keys, vandalism and breach of trust.
- Broken glass. Covered: windscreen, side and rear windows. Excluded: the rear window forming part of a convertible roof. A detailed, paid invoice in your name is required.
- Natural forces. Covered: landslide, falling rocks, storm, hail, flood, earthquake. Excluded: flooding caused by a pipe at the parking place, and accidental damage that follows the natural event.
- Animal collision. Covered: unexpected contact with an animal. Excluded: damage from an animal's continuous scratching or gnawing, and again the accidental damage that follows.
One line deserves two readings: tyres are excluded unless they are hit together with other covered damage.
Theft: the anti-theft clause that can cancel everything
Theft is the most expensive cover to lose, and the one with the hardest conditions.
At Ethias the vehicle must carry a working anti-theft system meeting the IM standard, failing which the right to cover is lost, unless the specific conditions say otherwise. Theft or damage resulting from losing a key, abandoning or forgetting a key in or on the vehicle, or not activating the anti-theft system is excluded. Theft of the keys themselves is only covered if it creates an imminent danger of car theft, not if they were left in a public place or simply mislaid.
The mechanism has a name: forfeiture of cover, which punishes a breach rather than an uninsured risk. The Insurance Ombudsman's figures show how sensitive this ground is: theft complaints more than doubled in 2025 according to its annual report, and refusals often rest on these prevention measures.
Ethias also sets a deadline: the payout is due at the latest on the thirtieth day after the declaration if the car has not been found. If it reappears, you may take it back against repayment, or abandon it to the insurer.
The roe deer is covered, and the marten?
It depends on the contract. This is the most useful comparison in this article.
A general-audience guide consulted for this analysis includes, without nuance, damage caused by the animal itself among the risks covered by mini-omnium. At Ethias the text excludes damage from an animal's continuous scratching or gnawing. A marten chewing your cables for three nights falls under that exclusion, whereas a roe deer hit on a country road is unexpected contact.
Another, quieter nuance: accidental consequential damage is excluded. You swerve to avoid the animal and end up in a ditch: the skid is an accident, not an animal collision, and falls under the cover that pays for at-fault accidents. Same logic as for hail, detailed in our article on hail damage.
Mini-omnium plus: what does total loss change?
It adds a single thing, but a decisive one: the unrepairable car after an accident, even at fault.
At Ethias, mini-omnium plus is made of the five covers plus total loss. The scale is published: no depreciation for the first 12 months, 1.5% a month from month 13 to 24, then 1% a month from month 25 to 72, with market value taking over from month 73. Apply it to a car insured at €24,000 and destroyed in month 30: 12 months at 1.5% make 18%, six months at 1% make 6%, so 24% depreciation and a payout of €18,240. The same accident in month 14 pays €23,280 (€24,000 minus 2 months at 1.5%, i.e. 3%). This illustrates a mechanism, not a price: the calculation base is in the contract, as our article on market value, agreed value and new-for-old explains.
The exclusions of this cover are stricter than those of mini-omnium. They notably rule out a car without a valid roadworthiness test, a driver at 1.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood or more, and races or speed contests. An expired roadworthiness certificate on the day of the accident is therefore enough to rule out total loss, whatever the cause of the claim.
Incidental costs, road damage, at-fault accident: who pays the rest?
Three cases come back after every claim, and mini-omnium alone settles none of them.
Incidental costs first. At Ethias, extinguishing the fire, temporary garaging, transport to the repairer and dismantling to prepare the estimate are covered up to €1,250 excluding VAT. Then the pothole: road damage is not an insured risk under mini-omnium, but it opens a claim against the road authority, detailed in our article on pothole damage. Finally the accident you caused: under mini-omnium, repairing your own car stays at your expense, as liability cover only compensates the other party.

How do you check your mini-omnium in ten minutes?
Open your specific conditions, then the general ones, using the PDF search function. In this order (Belgian documents are in French or Dutch, so search in the language of yours):
- Search « mini » or « partielle », sometimes « omnium partielle » or « petite omnium ». The list of covers you bought is there, with the excess on each.
- Type « antivol », « clé » and « verrouill ». Note what the contract demands and the cases where cover is lost.
- Search « animal », « gratter », « mordre » and « rongeur » to find out whether marten damage is covered.
- Search « pneu » and « vitre »: glass excess, approved repairer network, tyre exclusions.
- Search « perte totale » and « dépréciation » to learn whether the unrepairable car is covered, and on which scale.
- Note the claim notification deadline: the standard liability contract sets eight days, your mini-omnium sets its own.
Our step-by-step reading of specific conditions shows where each item sits.
To set formulas side by side on these criteria, the comparison tool lines up the covers, the ranking of the best car insurers details what each company covers and refuses, and the quiz frames the level of cover that suits your car. For stolen belongings or wheels, see the article on theft from the car; for a claim that has already happened, the steps are in reporting a claim.
Belgian car insurance contracts fall under the Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance. In a dispute over the scope of a cover, the Insurance Ombudsman handles consumer complaints free of charge, and the FSMA, the Belgian financial services and markets authority, supervises the conduct rules of insurers and intermediaries. The Wikifin portal explains omnium formulas. The Ethias extracts illustrate market practice and do not replace your own conditions.
