List of car insurance companies in Belgium, checked

Twelve brands, how many licensed insurers? NBB code, classes, solvency ratio and complaints: the four checks that separate a big name from a direct insurer in Belgium.

ByGrégory8 min read

A handful of companies licensed by the National Bank of Belgium carry most of the car insurance sold to private drivers, under more brands than there are companies. Checking one takes ten minutes: licence code, published solvency, complaints, terms. On the first three, a big name and a direct insurer are almost always equal. The fourth decides.

Twelve brands, how many licensed companies?

Ten, in our survey. A brand is a trading name; the company is the legal entity that carries the risk, holds the licence and pays the claims. The NBB, Belgium's prudential supervisor for insurers, publishes the exhaustive list of Belgian-law insurance companies, and that list is what counts, not a website's home page.

The table below links the most common motor brands to the entity that actually insures you. It cross-checks that list, the solvency reports each group published for 2025 and the product information documents, as surveyed on 3 October 2026.

Two lessons already. DVV is not a separate company but a brand of Belfius Insurance. Yuzzu, on the other hand, is no mere shop window: its product information document identifies it as a company licensed under number 1455. For a brand missing from the table, Belfius Direct for example, the rule is the same: read the insurer's name at the bottom of the IPID, never the one on the logo.

Checking the licence and solvency of a car insurance company in Belgium
One brand, one entity, one NBB code: the check fits on a single line.

Big name or direct insurer: the head-to-head on four criteria

A driver torn between a household-name insurer and a less familiar online one is really asking four different questions. They do not get the same answer.

CriterionLarge traditional insurerDirect insurer or newer brandWhere to check yourself
LicencePresent, long-standingPresent if it is on the NBB list or notified from another European countryNBB list, footer of the IPID
SolvencyAbove 200% for most, end 2025Similar when the entity is Belgian and part of a groupAnnual report or solvency report of the company
ComplaintsNo public figure per companyNo public figure per companyOmbudsman report, by class only
Published termsLong, often spread across several documentsOften shorter, less modular coverGeneral conditions and IPID, before signing

The verdict fits in one sentence: on the first three rows the gap between the two camps is thin or invisible, on the last one it can be worth several thousand euros.

NBB licence: the line at the bottom of the IPID

This is the fastest check, and the only binary one. A company covering motor third-party liability in Belgium must be licensed for class 10a, or notified from another European Economic Area state, in which case it must name that country's supervisor.

The standardised insurance product information document (IPID), two pages every insurer must hand over before you sign, gives the exact company name and usually its licence number and classes. Few classes matter for a car policy:

  • class 10a, motor vehicle liability, compulsory;
  • class 3, damage to the vehicle itself, in other words omnium (comprehensive cover);
  • class 1, personal accident, which carries driver protection;
  • class 17, legal protection;
  • class 18, assistance and breakdown.

A real example. Yuzzu's motor IPID lists licence 1455 for classes 1a, 3, 10a, 10b, 16, 17 and 18, among others. Every cover in a complete car policy is there.

One last check avoids nasty surprises: the FSMA warnings list, published by the Financial Services and Markets Authority, which names firms operating without authorisation. The authority itself warns that a company's absence from the list does not prove it is authorised.

Does the solvency ratio tell a driver anything useful?

A little, and less than you might think.

The ratio compares an insurer's own funds with the capital the Solvency II rules require it to hold to survive a shock expected only once in two hundred years. An insurer whose required capital is €1 billion and which holds €2.1 billion shows 210%. Below 100%, the NBB demands a recovery plan. At the end of 2025, according to Milliman's analysis of Belgian solvency reports published on 18 September 2026, the weighted market average reached 195%, up from 185% a year earlier, and over 70% of the market was covered by insurers at 180% or more.

For a driver, the useful reading is therefore negative: a ratio helps rule out a risk, not choose between two sound insurers. That AG Insurance publishes 213% and Belfius Insurance 201% makes no difference to whether your bumper gets paid, and a company at 227% can perfectly well refuse a theft claim that its neighbour at 179% would have accepted. A figure far below average, or falling sharply from one year to the next, does deserve a question to your intermediary.

What if the car insurer went bankrupt?

The accident victim stays protected. Article 19bis-11 of the Act of 21 November 1989 requires the Belgian Common Guarantee Fund, to which every motor insurer active on the Belgian market must contribute, to compensate injured parties when the company covering third-party liability is bankrupt, or has lost its licence and no longer meets its obligations.

Your omnium is not part of that mechanism, since it covers your own car rather than damage done to others. In principle you then become a creditor of the insurer in liquidation, with the delay and uncertainty that implies. The risk is rare on today's Belgian market; it explains why solvency matters more for omnium on a recent car than for liability-only cover.

Why no official complaints ranking exists

Because nobody publishes one. The 2025 annual report of the Insurance Ombudsman, Belgium's free out-of-court complaints service for insurance, gives volumes by class and by reason, never by company: 9,429 requests in total, 1,697 of them in car insurance, up 15%. In 59% of the car cases analysed, the outcome favoured the person who complained. Requests about car premiums rose by half, and those about theft cover more than doubled. The average handling time for an investigated case was 88 days.

The "reputation rankings" that circulate therefore rely on satisfaction surveys, online reviews or commissioned polls. They have their uses. They are not a register. How the mediation service works is explained in our article on the Insurance Ombudsman.

Are the published terms the only criterion that really decides?

Yes, and the Ombudsman supplies the proof. In the 2025 theft cases, refusals often rested on prevention measures required by the contract and not followed, such as a lost key or a spare left in the glovebox. Two insurers that are equally licensed, equally solvent and equally silent about their complaints can word that clause very differently, and that wording is what will decide your payout.

So compare two quotes at the same price line by line, starting with exclusions, theft, glass cover and the basis of compensation. Our method for reading your particular conditions in ten minutes and our article on forfeiture of cover show where to look. The choice of channel is covered in our comparison of direct insurer, bank or broker, and your intermediary's status is checked separately, on the FSMA register.

Verdict

To compare insurers on their cover rather than their logo, start from the ranking of the best car insurers in Belgium, then use the offer comparison and the quiz, which helps set the level of cover your car needs.

The solvency ratios quoted are those each company published for 2025 (KBC Insurance in its press release of 12 February 2026, Ethias in its annual results, AXA Belgium and Belfius Insurance in their solvency reports, AG Insurance according to Milliman's analysis), except P&V, whose latest figure found relates to the end of 2024. This site informs and compares. It is not an insurance intermediary and gives no individual recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Look up its name in the National Bank's list of Belgian-law insurance companies, then check the licence number and the classes of business in the product information document (IPID). For motor cover, class 10a (motor vehicle liability) must be listed. An insurer from another European country operating in Belgium is supervised in its home country and must name that supervisor.

By total assets at the end of 2025, AG Insurance leads with about 22% of market assets, ahead of KBC Insurance, AXA Belgium, Allianz Benelux, Belfius Insurance, P&V and Ethias, according to Milliman's analysis published in September 2026. Size says nothing about the quality of a given car policy.

Yes. It means the insurer holds twice the own funds required to absorb a shock with a one-in-two-hundred probability over a year. The regulatory minimum is 100%, and the Belgian average reached 195% at the end of 2025. Between 190% and 230%, the gap makes no difference to a driver.

For third-party liability, the victim stays protected: the Act of 21 November 1989 requires the Belgian Common Guarantee Fund (Fonds commun de garantie) to compensate injured parties if the insurer goes bankrupt. Your own omnium is not part of that mechanism. In principle, you become a creditor of the company in liquidation.

No. The Insurance Ombudsman's annual report publishes volumes by class and by reason, not by company. The reputation rankings you find online rely on surveys or reviews, never on an official complaints register. Read them as polls.
