Belfius car insurance: formulas, limits, branch

Belfius Car is sold through branches, with three levels of omnium cover. Partner garage, capped assistance, exclusions: the settings that decide real protection.

Belfius Car is the car policy Belfius sells through its branches, with three levels of omnium, three levels of assistance and two legal expenses options. The bank's name reassures. It says nothing about what your contract will pay, because that depends on three settings chosen at signing.

Belfius Car and Belfius Direct Assurances: two contracts, not one

First confusion to clear up. Under one bank name, Belfius's car insurance page presents two products that are not bought the same way.

Belfius Car is aimed, according to the page, at drivers covering more than 15,000 km a year. It is taken out in a branch: "we support you in branch to find the formula that suits you best", writes Belfius. The pay-per-kilometre policy belongs to Belfius Direct Assurances, is priced online and targets drivers under 15,000 km a year, with a refund if you drive less than estimated.

Why insist? Because each product has its own general conditions. Those of Belfius Car carry a September 2024 edition; those of Belfius Direct Assurances, available on the Belgian comparison site comparateur.be, carry a June 2026 edition. A review of one does not apply to the other, and that is the most common mistake when comparing "Belfius" with a competitor.

Three omnium formulas in the shop window, six guarantees in the contract

The commercial picture is simple. Mini Omnium covers theft, fire, glass breakage, natural forces and collisions with animals. Mini Omnium Up adds material damage in case of total loss, including when you are at fault or the other party stays unidentified. Full Omnium covers all damage to the vehicle, at-fault accidents and vandalism included. (Omnium is the Belgian term for own-damage cover.)

The contract tells another story. In the general conditions of Belfius Car, the "Assurance du véhicule" chapter does not list three formulas but six numbered guarantees: fire, theft, glass breakage, natural forces, material damage if total loss, material damage. The commercial formulas are bundles of these guarantees, and the bundle decides what gets paid.

Collision with an animalYes, in principleYes, in principleYes, in principle
Car written off after an at-fault accidentNoYes, in principleYes
Partial repair after an at-fault accidentNoNo, in principleYes

This table follows the public description on the product page and the logic of the numbered guarantees. It does not replace your particular conditions: only the line written there binds the insurer.

Is Mini Omnium Up enough after an accident that was your fault?

Not always.

The word "Up" suggests an almost complete tier. Yet the guarantee added covers material damage if total loss. If your car is repairable, even at 4,000 euros, that guarantee does not in principle step in: partial repair falls under the separate "material damage" guarantee, the one Full Omnium adds. Put differently, Up protects against the catastrophe, not against the crumpled bumper.

A worked example makes the gap clear. A small car worth 9,000 euros hits a post, with 3,500 euros of repairs: under Up, repairs stay with you because the car is not declared a total loss; under Full, they are paid, excess deducted. Conversely, if the same impact cost 9,500 euros to repair, the car would be economically lost and Up would kick in, in principle. The total-loss threshold is written in the conditions, and it deserves a question to the branch before signing.

On the age at which omnium stops making sense, the article on mini omnium versus full omnium sets out the trade-off.

Does the partner garage really cost 250 euros more?

Yes, and Belfius says so itself, with an example: if you do not use a partner garage, your contractual excess, for instance 500 euros, rises by 250 euros to 750 euros.

The arithmetic deserves a cold look. On a 1,200 euro claim, you pay 500 euros within the partner network and 750 euros outside it, 50% more for the same work. On an 800 euro claim, the payout drops from 300 euros to 50. The smaller the damage, the more this setting weighs.

Two habits follow. Ask for the list of partner garages near you before signing, not after your first accident: a network absent from your area makes the higher excess almost automatic. And if you want to keep your neighbourhood mechanic, look for the lowest starting excess, since the surcharge adds to it. The article on the English-style excess explains the other forms of excess found in Belgium.

Three assistance levels, three caps

Vehicle assistance under Belfius Car is chosen separately from omnium. The three levels share a base, 24-hour breakdown and towing in Belgium and abroad, and differ in the mobility that follows the breakdown.

LevelReplacement vehicleMobility budgetDamage to the rental vehicle
Mobilité StartCategory B, 7 days maximum abroadUp to 85 euros a dayUp to 4,000 euros a year
Mobilité GoCategory B, 7 days maximum in Belgium and abroadUp to 85 euros a dayUp to 4,000 euros a year
Mobilité Go+Category D (saloon), 15 days maximum in Belgium and abroadUp to 85 euros a dayUp to 7,000 euros a year, plus an accident recovery service, once a year

The most concrete difference shows at the first step: with Start, the replacement vehicle is only provided abroad. For someone who rarely travels, that level does not replace the car on the day it breaks down outside their own front door.

Here is the real limit. The product page excludes from assistance the maintenance and repair costs of the vehicle, immobilisation on a road the tow truck cannot reach, and a breakdown that has already required two interventions in the previous 12 months. A car that breaks down a third time in a year is therefore not towed under the contract. To compare with another assistance contract, see the article on breakdown cover.

Where are the exclusions in a Belfius policy?

Not on the product page. It describes guarantees, not their limits, except for assistance, which is more talkative. For omnium, exclusions are read in the general conditions, in the chapter on vehicle insurance, then in your particular conditions, which refine or remove them.

Look for these points, in this order, pen in hand:

  • Theft: what happens to the guarantee if the keys were left in the car or remained accessible from outside?
  • Glass breakage: are headlights and light units named as covered or as excluded? The windscreen alone does not answer that.
  • Tyre-only damage, normal wear and maintenance defects.
  • The driver: minimum age, valid licence, alcohol, drugs, and what the insurer reserves as recourse against the policyholder.
  • Declared use: mileage, main driver, the vehicle described in the particular conditions.
  • Total loss: the threshold, the basis for calculating the payout, any depreciation.

On each point, the answer is in the text of your own contract, never in this guide. The article on reading your particular conditions gives the method, and the one on windscreen cover shows why the headlight question changes everything.

Does the bank change anything about the protection?

The objection is serious. Belfius is a solid bank, its insurer belongs to a well-known group, and the branch is two streets away: many see that as a guarantee in itself.

It deserves to be taken seriously, then qualified. An insurer's financial strength says it will pay what it owes. It says nothing about what it owes, meaning the extent of the guarantees, and that is what separates two contracts at the same price. As for the branch, it presents the Belfius range: advice there is useful, but it does not replace a comparison with a broker or a direct insurer, who do not sell the same products. The article on direct insurer versus broker sets out what each channel changes, notably for defence after a claim.

A point in Belfius's favour exists too. On assistance, the page publishes its caps and exclusions in black and white, which not every insurer does. A dispute over the extent of a guarantee can then be taken free of charge to the Insurance Ombudsman, the Belgian dispute service for insurance consumers, and the FSMA, the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority, supervises distribution. The bank is therefore neither a flaw nor a protection: it is a channel, with its advantages and blind spots.

To set these formulas against other Belgian insurers, the car insurance comparison tool sets guarantees side by side and the ranking of the best car insurers details what each company covers. The quiz helps fix the omnium level that suits your car.

The Belfius documents quoted here are public: the Belfius Car product page and the Belfius Car general conditions can be read directly at the insurer (in French). To understand insurance terms in plain language, Wikifin, the financial education site run by the FSMA, is a reference.

This site informs and compares. It is not an insurance intermediary and gives no individual recommendation. The guarantees described are those publicly displayed by Belfius on the survey date (30 September 2026) and may change.

Frequently asked questions

In principle, no. The Belfius Car product page places vandalism under Full Omnium, while Mini Omnium is described as covering theft, fire, glass breakage, natural forces and collisions with animals. Mini Omnium Up adds material damage in case of total loss. Always check the exact line in your particular conditions, since it overrides any commercial description.

All three levels (Mobilité Start, Go and Go+) advertise 24-hour breakdown and towing service in Belgium and abroad. They differ in the replacement vehicle: category B for up to 7 days for Start (abroad only) and Go, category D for up to 15 days for Go+, or a mobility budget capped at 85 euros a day. Excluded are maintenance and repair costs, immobilisation on a road the tow truck cannot reach, and a breakdown that already required two interventions in the previous 12 months.

No, according to the product page, which states branch subscription for Belfius Car. An online route exists, but for a different product: the pay-per-kilometre policy from Belfius Direct Assurances, presented for drivers covering less than 15,000 km a year. The two contracts have their own general conditions.
