Yes, monthly payment usually costs more, 3 to 7% at several Belgian insurers. But the gap in euros stays modest. A missed debit weighs far more: at the end of a legal procedure the insurer may suspend your cover, and an accident during the suspension is not covered.
Does paying monthly really push the premium up?
It depends on the company. A Selectra survey run in September 2025 approached 18 Belgian car insurers, and ten answered. Five apply the same price whatever the payment rhythm, five give a discount for annual payment.
The gaps found range from 3 to 7% at Allianz, Ethias, Argenta and DVV, and up to 11.24% at Yuzzu. The survey estimates instalment admin fees at 3 to 5% of the total premium.
These percentages are dated readings, not price promises. Your quote remains the only truth.
28.80 euros a year on a 720 euro premium
Take an illustrative annual premium of 720 euros. With a 4% surcharge, monthly payment comes to 748.80 euros: 28.80 euros more over the year, or 2.40 euros a month. At 7% you reach 770.40 euros. At 11.24%, 800.93 euros.
| Monthly surcharge | Premium paid monthly | Difference over the year |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (same price) | 720.00 € | 0 € |
| 3% | 741.60 € | 21.60 € |
| 7% | 770.40 € | 50.40 € |
| 11.24% | 800.93 € | 80.93 € |
That gap does not deserve to upset your budget. Compare it with what you could save by renegotiating your policy or by checking the increase announced on your renewal notice.
What do you risk when a debit is refused?
Your cover does not stop the next day. Failure to pay the premium on its due date may lead to suspension of cover, but Article 69 of the Belgian Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance attaches a condition: the debtor must first have received a formal notice.
The notice goes by bailiff's writ or registered letter, and it states the consequences of non-payment. Suspension takes effect only after a delay of at least fifteen days. As Belgian legal publications summarise it, the procedure therefore leaves a window to put things right.
A window. Not an unlimited reprieve.
Cover is suspended: which claims remain covered?
None of those occurring during the suspension, in principle. Suspension deprives the policyholder and the insured of cover for claims until the overdue premiums are paid, with interest and costs where applicable. The premium itself remains due, because only the insurer's obligation is suspended, not the contract.
Under third-party liability (RC, the compulsory part of Belgian car insurance), the victim does not pay for your delay: they are compensated, and the insurer then turns against you. A bill of several thousand euros for a 60 euro instalment is the worst arithmetic in car insurance.
Your own comprehensive cover (omnium) does not pay for your own damage occurring during the suspension. The mechanism resembles forfeiture of cover, but it is not the same thing: here the insurer relies on non-payment, not on a breach of a policy clause.
Can the insurer go as far as cancelling?
Yes, with the same procedural rigour. According to the legal source consulted, three routes exist: cancellation outright after a formal notice and a minimum delay of fifteen days, suspension with a reservation of the right to cancel, or suspension without reservation, which then requires a new formal notice before cancellation.
For the driver, the consequence shows in the file: a policy cancelled for non-payment makes finding a new insurer harder. Our article on car insurance after cancellation covers that path, and the one on the claims history certificate shows what your new insurer will read.
Monthly or annual: which choice for your situation?
The table below sums up common cases. It describes a logic, not your policy.
| Your situation | Prudent choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortable cash, insurer that discounts annual payment | Annual | You save 3 to 7% in principle, with no risk of a missed debit |
| Tight budget, insurer with identical pricing | Monthly | No surcharge, and you smooth the spending |
| Tight budget, insurer that surcharges monthly | Quarterly or half-yearly, if offered | The surcharge often falls with less frequent instalments |
| Account often overdrawn at month end | Annual, or move the debit date | A refused debit starts the formal-notice procedure |
| First policy, young driver | Compare both amounts on the quote | The premium is high, so is the gap in euros |
One detail weighs heavily nonetheless. Many policies also provide that cover starts only after the first premium is paid, as Article 69 allows. The first debit is therefore not a detail: it is the date your cover really begins.

What should you check in your policy before choosing?
Half an hour is enough, with the general conditions open as a PDF. Search for these points in order:
- "premium payment", "due date", "instalments": the rhythm offered and any surcharge.
- "first premium": does cover start at signature or at the first payment?
- "formal notice": the procedure described and the delays announced.
- "suspension" and "cancellation": the difference between the two in your policy.
- The debit date: ask to set it a few days after your salary arrives.
To place these clauses among the others, our guide to reading your specific conditions gives the method.
Ombudsman, FSMA and the law: remedies for a payment error
Start by writing to the insurer or broker with proof of payment. If the answer is unsatisfactory, the Insurance Ombudsman examines disputes free of charge. The FSMA (Financial Services and Markets Authority) supervises the conduct rules of insurers and intermediaries, without deciding your individual case. The general framework is the Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance.
To set two offers side by side, annual and monthly price included, the comparison tool lines up the cover, the ranking of the best car insurance details what each company covers and refuses, and the simulator or the quiz frame your profile in two minutes. If you want to leave, the steps are in the guide to cancelling your car insurance.
The price gaps cited come from the Selectra survey on annual payment of car insurance (September 2025, ten responding insurers). The suspension and cancellation rules are those of the Act of 4 April 2014 as summarised by Actualités du droit belge (2015), to be checked against the text in force.
