Mini-omnium or full omnium: what is the difference?
The difference fits in one sentence: mini-omnium covers the damage you suffer, full omnium also covers the damage you cause to your own car. Both plans sit on top of third-party liability (RC), the only legally mandatory cover in Belgium, which never compensates your own vehicle.
Concretely, with a mini-omnium, if you cause an accident and damage your own car, the repair stays entirely at your expense. With a full omnium, your insurer covers that damage, minus the deductible. That is the whole point of the choice: pay less each year, or be protected even when the accident is your fault.

What exactly does mini-omnium cover?
Mini-omnium protects your car against a series of events beyond your control. In Belgium, it generally includes fire, theft, glass breakage, natural disasters (floods, hail, storms, landslides) and collision with animals, including damage caused by rodents.
It is an intermediate plan, between RC alone and full omnium. It reassures the owner of a car that still has value, without the cost of total coverage. The key point: it never reimburses an accident you are responsible for. If you hit a pole or another vehicle at fault, your own repairs are not covered.
What does full omnium add compared with mini-omnium?
Full omnium keeps all the mini-omnium guarantees and adds your own material damage. In other words, it covers damage to your vehicle even when you are responsible for the accident, or when there is no identified third party.
To the mini-omnium guarantees, full omnium typically adds: at-fault material damage (the heart of the plan), vandalism, accidents with no identified third party and the "ghost driver" case. It is the maximum protection, the one that makes sense when your car's value is high and you could not cover a heavy repair or a replacement out of your own pocket.
| Guarantee | RC only | Mini-omnium | Full omnium |

How much does each plan cost in 2026?
In 2026, expect on average €345 to €660 per year for a mini-omnium and €640 to €1,120 per year for a full omnium in Belgium. Full omnium therefore roughly costs double the mini-omnium, for the same car and profile.
The price depends mostly on the vehicle's value and age, power, region, bonus-malus and chosen deductible. The gap between insurers for an identical profile can reach several hundred euros: the big names on the Belgian market — AG Insurance, Ethias, AXA, Belfius Direct, KBC, Yuzzu, P&V — do not price the same way depending on the profile. That is precisely why you should compare the offers before signing, rather than renewing your contract out of habit.

Up to what vehicle age is full omnium worth it?
Generally, full omnium is justified during the vehicle's first 5 years, when the car retains significant value and an at-fault claim would be very expensive. Beyond that, depreciation does its work and the plan becomes proportionally too expensive.
Two simple benchmarks help decide. First, the premium rule: if your annual omnium premium exceeds about 10% of the car's current value, it is time to switch to mini-omnium. Second, the residual value: when the car drops clearly below €12,000 to €15,000, full omnium loses its economic interest. Good to know: some insurers, such as Ethias, keep 100% of the purchase value for 12 months, then apply depreciation (around 18% per year), sometimes extendable to 30 months for a supplement — a detail that changes the picture in the early years.
How does the deductible work in omnium?
The deductible is the share of the claim that stays at your expense; the insurer reimburses the rest. In omnium, it is often set at 2.5 to 3% of the vehicle's value (sometimes capped for expensive cars), or a flat amount around €500, as at Belfius Direct.
The deductible is a direct price lever: the higher it is, the lower the premium, but the more you pay when trouble hits. Some companies waive it under conditions: Ethias, for example, offers €0 deductible from age 30 when the repair is done in an approved garage. Before signing, always check the actual deductible amount and the conditions to cancel it: that is where the real differences hide between two quotes with a similar headline price.
Mini-omnium or full omnium: which to choose for your profile?
The right plan depends first on your car's value and your ability to absorb a repair. New, recent, financed or leased car: full omnium is a must, and the financing contract often requires it. Car aged 5 years or more, paid in cash, of moderate value: mini-omnium is enough in the vast majority of cases.
Ask yourself three simple questions. Could you pay out of pocket to repair or replace your car after an at-fault accident? If not, full omnium is justified. Does the omnium premium exceed 10% of the vehicle's value? If so, switch to mini-omnium. Do you drive little and carefully with an already amortised car? Mini-omnium, or even RC alone, becomes the rational choice. To refine according to your exact situation, take the personalised quiz: it combines the vehicle's age, its value and your budget to point you to the right plan.
