Breakdown cover rescues you when your car can no longer move, but every policy draws its own boundary. The age of the vehicle, the number of breakdowns allowed, the tow truck called without the assistance provider and the length of the replacement car change everything. Two public Belgian documents, read side by side, show it line by line.
Does breakdown cover include everything that leaves you stranded?
No. It covers what its general conditions list, within the limits they set, and nothing else.
Assistance means organising and paying for help to an immobilised vehicle: roadside repair, towing, sometimes a replacement car, repatriation or a night in a hotel. It repairs nothing. Parts, labour and diagnosis stay with you, or with your omnium (the Belgian term for own-damage cover) if an accident is involved. In Belgium it is even a separate line of business: an insurer needs a specific licence for the assistance branch, and the product sold under the AXA brand is in fact carried by a distinct subsidiary, Inter Partner Assistance, as the footer of its general conditions states.
No recommendation without reading the exclusions. On breakdown cover the rule pays off faster than anywhere else, because the exclusions fit on one page.
Two Belgian policies read side by side
I took two documents published by the insurers themselves: AXA Belgium's Confort Auto Vehicle Assistance general conditions, June 2021 edition, and the product information document for Belfius Direct's Assistance insurance, dated July 2023. The first goes into detail, the second summarises, so the comparison is not perfectly symmetrical: « not mentioned » means the line does not appear in that document, not that it is missing from the full policy.
| Clause | AXA Confort Auto Vehicle Assistance (general conditions 06.2021) | Belfius Direct Assistance insurance (information document 07/2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from home | No minimum distance written for Belgium | Help from the policyholder's home |
| Vehicle age | Under 10 years when the policy is concluded | No age limit mentioned |
| Abroad | Included, closed list of countries | « Abroad » option to be purchased |
| Replacement car | 7 days, 15 at an approved garage, 30 after theft, category B | 5 consecutive days at most, or a 200 € mobility budget |
| Lost or stolen keys | Door opening, taxi capped at 65 € or tow | Transport capped at 100 € to fetch a spare |
| Repeat breakdowns | Refused after 2 breakdowns with the same cause or 3 in 12 months | Excludes repeat breakdowns caused by failure to repair |
| Tow truck called without the provider | Capped at 250 €, or 500 € if the police ordered the tow | Not mentioned |
| Roadworthiness test | Excluded if the vehicle is not compliant | Not mentioned |
| Flat tyre, empty tank | Roadside help or tow, limited quantity of fuel | Not detailed |
In the brochure, both products promise the same thing, a breakdown service. On paper they part ways on at least six lines, and none of those differences shows up in a price table.
A note on method. The AXA edition quoted dates from June 2021; your policy may refer to a more recent one, whose reference number appears in your particular conditions.

Zero-kilometre breakdown cover: what do the policies actually say?
A mileage threshold is the minimum distance between your home and the breakdown below which assistance will not come out. Some entry-level formulas only activate beyond a radius of several dozen kilometres, on the assumption that near home you will manage on your own.
That is exactly where most breakdowns happen. A flat battery on a January morning, in the driveway or outside the building, is only covered if the policy covers your home.
Both documents analysed pass this test. Belfius Direct says so in black and white, AXA sets no distance for Belgium. That is not true of every offer on the market, and checking takes ten seconds: a full-text search on « domicile », then on « km ».
Vehicle age, the clause that rules you out from the start
With AXA, cover only applies to a vehicle whose first registration is less than 10 years old at the moment the policy is concluded.
Read the wording to the end. The threshold is assessed at signature: a car nine and a half years old gets in, a city car first registered eleven years ago stays outside, even in perfect condition and even with a spotless roadworthiness test, because the clause looks only at the date on the registration certificate issued by the DIV, the Belgian vehicle registration authority. If you change car during the policy, ask your intermediary, because the new designated vehicle may be assessed against the same condition.
The Belfius Direct document mentions no age limit. Both products do, however, exclude the same families of vehicles: over 3.5 tonnes, taxis, rental vehicles and trade plates.
Replacement car after a breakdown: how many days, on what terms?
The number of days advertised is only the start of the answer. The conditions attached matter more.
With AXA, in Belgium, the replacement car, category B at most, is lent during repairs for 7 consecutive days after the incident. That rises to 15 days if the repair is done at an approved garage, and to 30 days after theft, provided you filed a police report before calling assistance. Three conditions come with it:
- the car must be returned as soon as yours is repaired, even before the period ends;
- it is not owed if the provider neither organised nor approved the tow;
- the rental agency applies its own rules, notably a minimum age, a deposit and a possible mileage limit.
The third point hits young drivers hardest, since some agencies turn them away below a given age or licence seniority. That profile is covered in our article on car insurance for young drivers.
With Belfius Direct, the base cover provides 5 consecutive days at most, or a 200 € mobility budget.
A worked example. Gearbox failure, part expected in twelve days. At your usual garage, outside the network, the AXA formula leaves you five days without a car. At a network garage, all twelve days are covered. With the Belfius Direct formula you drive for five days, or you receive 200 € to spread across taxis and trains.
Three breakdowns a year, and the fourth is on you
The least known clause on the subject sits at the end of the AXA conditions. Assistance no longer comes out if, over the last twelve months, it has already attended twice for a breakdown with the same cause, or three times for any breakdown at all.
Belfius Direct reasons differently: its exclusions target repeat breakdowns caused by failure to repair the vehicle. One counts call-outs, the other looks at their cause. On a tired car a counter is more dangerous than a cause test, because it triggers even when every breakdown was properly repaired.
Two more lines deserve a look. AXA excludes assistance if the vehicle is not compliant with the roadworthiness test at the time of the incident. And when you call a tow truck yourself without going through the provider, payment is capped at 250 €, unless the police or emergency services prevented you from calling, or at 500 € if the police brought in an approved recovery firm on the motorway. A night tow billed at 380 € by a firm picked at random therefore leaves you 130 € to pay.
Does liability-only cover include breakdown assistance?
As a rule no.
Compulsory third-party liability cover, imposed by the law of 21 November 1989, pays for damage you cause to others. Your stranded car is not part of it. Some insurers slip basic post-accident assistance into their formula, but only a line in your particular conditions proves it. Mini omnium and full omnium do not include it automatically either.
Seven lines to find before you sign
Open the general conditions of the assistance on offer, with full-text search on, and look for these terms in order (most Belgian policies are in French or Dutch):
- « domicile » and « km »: the minimum distance for a call-out.
- « première mise en circulation » (first registration): the maximum vehicle age, at signature or during the policy.
- « 12 derniers mois » (last 12 months) or « répétitive » (repeated): the breakdown counter.
- « organisé » (organised) or « accord » (approval): the cap applied if you call a tow truck yourself.
- « jours consécutifs » (consecutive days): the length of the replacement car, and the garage condition that extends it.
- « contrôle technique » (roadworthiness test): the administrative exclusion.
- the list of countries: is cover abroad included or sold as an option?
Before driving beyond the Benelux, also check that list against your green card: liability cover and assistance do not necessarily share the same territory.
To choose a provider, insurer or specialist assistance company, the comparison of the best breakdown assistance in Belgium reviews the offers by driver profile. To place assistance within your policy as a whole, the car insurance comparison tool sets formulas side by side guarantee by guarantee, the ranking of the best car insurers details what each company covers and refuses, and the quiz takes two minutes if you are unsure about the level of cover. The method for reading your own documents is set out in the article on particular conditions.
Assistance contracts are governed, like the rest of your car insurance, by the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014. The FSMA, the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority, supervises the intermediaries who sell it, and the Insurance Ombudsman, the free Belgian dispute service for insurance consumers, handles disagreements over the scope of a guarantee. The documents quoted are public: the AXA Confort Auto Vehicle Assistance general conditions and the Belfius Direct Assistance information document.
